OryCon 18 Hotel
For the seventh year in a row, we're at the Red Lion/ Columbia River
hotel, North of downtown Portland. The room rate this year is
$78.00 (plus tax of about 9%) per night, for up to four people in the
room. Remember to indicate whether you wish the party or the non-party
wing, and to include a deposit or credit card number to guarantee your
room if you are not planning on arriving before 6 PM. At this time,
suites are not available during OryCon weekend.
All persons/groups wishing to hold a party should request a room in the
Party Wing, the Interstate Wing. The Red Lion hotel is requiring a
refundable deposit of $100.00 for all open parties. A party sign-up
list will be in the convention Office, as well as information about
posting your deposit with the hotel. The hotel is providing extra
cleaning supplies to party rooms, available upon request at the Front
Desk or through Housekeeping.
Please note that OryCon's room block in the Columbia River Red Lion
is full! However, there may still be rooms left in our overflow
block in the Jantzen Beach Red Lion next door. And, although the room
block has officially expired, the hotel may honor our room rate through
the con. So if you haven't yet made your reservation, do it
today!
Because we've been filling the hotel earlier each year, the reservation
information is included in this web page. You can make your
reservation by printing out and mailing this
form, or (even better) calling the hotel directly at (503)
283-2111. Just make sure that you tell the hotel that you're with
OryCon to make sure that you get the proper rates. (The toll-free
number for general reservations is 1-800-RED-LION, but if there is any
doubt about your reservation status, please call the hotel directly.)
Make your reservation today! And when you receive your confirmation,
please check it carefully to make sure there are no errors.
The rate listed above is good no matter when you make your
reservation -- but remember, OryCon has sold out their entire block for
several years in a row. This year we have fifty rooms blocked in the
Red Lion Jantzen Beach, a short walk across the parking lot from the
convention hotel. So, in addition to a Quiet Wing, we actually have
provided a Quiet Hotel!
If you have any problems with your reservation, feel free to call our hotel
liaison, Robert Verde, at (503) 231-8952 or email
rverde@gstworld.net. We're here
to help you.
The Columbia River Red Lion was hit severely by the 1996 Portland
Flood, but the hotel used the damage caused by the flood waters as an
opportunity to renovate the lower level as well as the riverside
deck. The major impact of the reconstruction on OryCon is that the
downstairs meeting rooms, including our Art Show space, are slightly
larger and lighter. There's also a new Board Room on the lower level,
which we will be using for small program items and scheduled gaming.
Instead of a party supply service, OryCon provides a large Safeway with
extended hours within walking distance from the hotel. It has lots of
interesting stuff, including a sushi bar.
How to Get to the Hotel
BY AIR: The airport is about 6 miles from the hotel. There is a
free shuttle from the airport running every 30 minutes from 7 AM to 11
PM (it serves both the Columbia River and Jantzen Beach Red Lions). A
taxi costs about $12. If you are renting a car, take 205 South, take
the Columbia Blvd. (1st) exit, stay right when the road splits, follow
Columbia Blvd. West to I-5 North, and follow the By Car directions.
(The following is from the
PDX airport's website:)
Due to Expansion of Portland International Airport, construction delays
will affect air travelers and PDX visitors from September 1996 to April
1998. Plan on using one of the following shuttle or parking programs
and keep hassles to a minimum:
- Parking at PDX during your trip:
Use the Economy Parking lot near I-205. It has 7100 spaces and the rate
is $6 per day/$36 per week. Free PDX shuttle service to and from the
lot is offered every 10 minutes, delivering you directly to the
terminal's front door.
- Parking to meet passengers:
Park in the Temporary Short-Term lot (formerly Long-Term) and shuttle
or walk to and from the terminal. The Temporary Short-Term lot has 1200
spaces and shuttles run every 5-10 minutes. Rates are $2 per hour/$22
per day.
- Dropping off passengers:
Pull into either the Economy or Temporary Short-Term lots, let your
passenger off at the closest shuttle shelter, and drive out in less
than 10 minutes at no charge.
- Disabled Parking:
Vehicles displaying disabled parking permits may park in the disabled
spaces in the Parking Garage near the east elevators. Or, park in the
Economy or Temporary Short-Term lots for a shuttle to and from the
terminal.
- Alternative Transportation:
When possible, take advantage of Tri-Met bus system, taxis, vans,
executive cars, limos and the Raz Trans Airporter to get right to the
terminal.
BY CAR: The Columbia River Red Lion is nestled next to
the Columbia River, just as you cross into Oregon from Washington on
Interstate 5. (Click here for a map (13K).)
Traveling either northbound or southbound, take exit #308 (signs will
read "Jantzen Beach Center" and "Hayden Island"). (This exit is about
7 miles from downtown Portland.) The Columbia River Red Lion is the
one with the red trim, to the west of the freeway (on the shopping
center side). If you're traveling south, it's the hotel to your right
just as you enter Oregon; if you're heading north, bear left under the
freeway, and it will be to your right.
BY BUS/RAIL: Union Station, the Portland Amtrak terminal, is
right next to the Greyhound station. From either, walk a couple of
blocks south (through the construction) to Everett St., and catch a #5
Jantzen Beach or Vancouver Tri-Met bus. The fare is $1.05, and
there's a bus stop in front of the hotel. (A taxi costs about $12.)
Note: It's actually more efficient to take Amtrak to Vancouver, since
that station is very close to the Jantzen Beach area.
