OryCon 32 Programming

Page last updated Nov 08 2010.

Lists have been culled and topics have been chosen. Panelists have received their tentative schedules. Adjustments have been made; compromises have been reached, and bribes have been paid.

Programming for OryCon 32 is done. Yes, people will still get sick, planes will still get delayed, and changes will still happen. But only if necessary.

A complete list of expected panelists can be found here.

Panelists: Green Room hours will be Fri 10-9, Sat 9-9, and Sun 9-4.

And a way to search the program online is also available.

This year we'll have a Teen Lounge for the younger set to hang out in. There will be music, comfy chairs, and light munchies. And no adults (or alcohol) are allowed.

We've a number of exciting items on program this year. Here's some highlights.

Friday

  • Endeavour Awards - This award is given annually to a distinguished science fiction or fantasy book written by a Pacific Northwest author, and will be presented just prior to Opening Ceremonies.

  • Music - As usual, some fine musicians will be attending OryCon this year and although the music panels start in the afternoon, the concerts start at 7pm Friday and run both Friday and Saturday nights.

  • Voodoo Doughnuts will have their truck in the front driveway from 7pm-11pm today, and again from 9am-noon and 7pm-11pm on Saturday.

Saturday

  • Interested in Mars? We'll have three talks Saturday morning that will explore the effort to understand Mars. David Levine talks about his experiences in a simulated Mars station; the OSU Robotics team displays and talks about their award-winning Mars Rover design (yes, it will be here); and Bob Kanefsky will talk about the Phoenix Mars lander project.

  • New dance! - Yes, OryCon has had dances both Friday and Saturday night for ages. But how about one during the day for those who are younger or are not night owls ... or both?

  • Zombie walk and Thriller dance -- Saturday night we will have people to teach you how to be a zombie, and how to dance the Thriller dance (aka Michael Jackson). Then the new zombie dancers will parade around the hotel before culminating in their rendition of Thriller performed in the ballroom.

  • Blood drive - The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive right at the hotel from 10:00am to 3:00pm. (See the blurb on the O32 home page for details on how to make an appointment.)

Sunday

  • Match Game SF - Remember Match Game from the 70's and 80's? (Were you even born then?) Anyway, in this game show, contestants try to predict the answers they will get from six "celebrities". Kevin Standlee hosts and provides science fiction related questions to the celebrities, and contestants are selected from the audience! Prizes will be awarded.

  • Art Auction - Following the Match Game will be the Art Auction. Pieces from the Art Show that had more than 2 bidders are opened to all bidders.

Creation Station, has completely taken over Washington for the entire con this year with a variety of crafts and speakers. Many of Creation Station's panels are hands on and suitable for children 10 or over. Others, especially the later panels, are more tailored for adults. Check your souvenir book or online for complete descriptions of their panels.

Since this is still a new hotel to many, the room names might mean little to you, so here's the general outline we used for programming.

  • Art Show and Dealer's Room are in the Exhibit Hall, which is next to the parking structure and does require you to go outside (albeit, not very far.) Some art panels do occur in the Art Show.

  • Gaming (and LARPing) are on the second floor, in the Cascade Ballroom. The Teen Lounge is also on the second floor. Everything else is on street level.

  • Filking, music performances, and music panels are centered in the rooms of the Pacific Northwest Ballroom. These rooms are to the right of the hotel desk as you face the desk.

  • Costuming panels and events are, in general, in the Sellwood room roughly across the hall from the main ballroom on Saturday.

  • A Comics track will run in Hamilton Friday afternoon; Sunday will see more Science.

  • Writing panels and events are, in general, in the Executive Business Center which is tucked in past the restaurant.

Note these are all generalities, and you'll want to carefully check the program for any particular panel. But we made a concerted effort this year to keep like events together.

This map of the hotel may help you to more effectively get lost once you're there. (It will also be in the pocket program so no need to bring your own copy.)
